Dr Merlin Willcox qualified in medicine from the University of Oxford in 1998 and completed GP training in 2004. Since then he has combined clinical work as a GP with research. My main research interests are primary health care in Africa, and herbal medicine. He has been involved in running several clinical trials of herbal medicines for malaria in Uganda, Madagascar and Mali. In October 2016 he was appointed as Academic Clinical Lecturer in Primary Care at the University of Southampton, and is part of the integrative medicine research group. He was a co-investigator in the ATAFUTI trial (which investigated the effectiveness of a herbal medicine for treatment of urinary infections in women) and is currently a co-investigator on the HATRIC trial (investigating feasibility of a clinical trial of Pelargonium sidoides for acute bronchitis in the UK) and the ORCHID-2 study (a study of Chinese herbal medicine for the management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).
