Dr Aunkh H Chabalala is the Director of the Indigenous Knowledge-Based Technology Innovation Unit of the Department of Science and Technology. He obtained B.Sc (Hons) Microbiology, and Master of Science from the University of Limpopo and University of Pretoria, respectively. He holds Master of Public Health (MPH in Epidemiology) and PhD (Management of Technology Innovation) from Tsinghua University (China) and Da Vinci Institute of Technology (South Africa). He is also a field supervisor and external examiner for Master and PhD dissertations from various universities. He has contributed towards 15 policy documents, health guidelines, journal articles and 1 book chapter. He is currently responsible for research, development and innovation with special interest in African Natural Medicines, Cosmeceuticals, Nutraceuticals and Health Infusions.
His passion is in interfacing ancient African knowledge with emerging science, e.g. quantum physics, psychobiology, epigenetics, etc as they relate to socio-economic development. He had previously worked as a Researcher at the South African Medical Research Council and as a Natural Medical Scientist and Field Epidemiologist at the National Department of Health responsible for Health Systems Research, Tuberculosis Control, Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases. He had also served as a WHO Fellow and Focal Person for Field Epidemiology; and Epidemic Preparedness and Response respectively. He is also the founder of a non-profit organisation, the Amen-Ra Institute and a micro enterprise, Infinite Earth (Pty Limited).
